Fall Conference Featured Speakers Sessions Announced
Turning Spilled Milk into Ice Cream:
Making Revision Work for You Dr. Katherine Schlick-Noe is a professor at University
of Seattle and co-author of Literature Circle in Middle
School, Literature Circles and Response, Getting Started
with Literature Circles.
The Greatest Gift: Essential
Considerations for Fostering Learner Independence Roxann Rose currently teaches 2nd and 3rd graders at an
independent school she co-founded. “Rock” also works
part-time as a professor to pre-service educators. In
addition she is coauthor of An Introduction to Reflective
Practice, The Creative Classroom Project and Fostering
Learner Independence.
Where Brain Research and Comprehension
Strategies Intersect
Barry Hoonan teaches at The Odyssey School in Bainbridge
Island School District. He also is co-author of Beyond
Reading and Writing and Literature Circles and Response.
The Wild and the Weird!
Kelly Milner Halls is a noted children's author who has
published many books including Saving the Bagdad Zoo, Tales
of the Cryptids: Creatures That May or May Not Exist, Wild
Horses: Galloping Through Time, Mysteries of the Mummy Kids,
and Albino Animals.
Keynote by Dr. Tim Rasinski
Tim is an
extremely knowledgeable, motivating, and dynamic speaker who
will headline our fall conference. He will be speaking at an
extended Keynote in the morning and again for a breakout
Featured Speaker session in the afternoon.
Dr. Rasinski is currently a professor of literacy education at
Kent State University. He has written over 150 articles and has
authored, co-authored or edited over 15 books or curriculum
programs on reading education. He is co-author of the award
winning fluency program called Fluency First, published by the
Wright Group. His scholarly interests include reading fluency
and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and
readers who struggle. His research on reading has been cited by
the National Reading Panel and has been published in journals
such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading
Psychology, and the Journal of Educational Research. As well as
publishing numerous best selling books with Teacher Created
Materials and Shell Education.
Tim recently served a three year term on the Board of Directors
of the International Reading Association and from 1992 to 1999
he was co-editor of The Reading Teacher, the world's most widely
read journal of literacy education. He currently serves as
co-editor of the Journal of Literacy Research. He is also a
past-president of the College Reading Association and he has won
the A. B. Herr Award from the College Reading Association for
his scholarly contributions to literacy education.
Prior to
coming to Kent State Tim taught literacy education at the
University of Georgia. He taught for several years as an
elementary and middle school classroom and Title I teacher in
rural Nebraska.
