WORD is a dynamic and diverse organization that
includes classroom teachers, reading specialists, consultants,
administrators, supervisors, college teachers, researchers,
psychologists, librarians, media specialists, students, and
parents. WORD has more than 2,000 members in Washington and is
affiliated with the International Reading Association.
The
WORD web site provides news and information for teachers of
reading and literacy coaches in Washington State. We invite you to explore our organization more
thoroughly through these pages and see what a difference we make
in reading and literacy in Washington.
We are thrilled to
be part of the most vital literacy organization in the country
and hope that, if you are not a member, you will consider
joining. We support the goals of the International Reading Association
in professional development, advocacy, partnerships, research,
and leadership in global issues.
Save The Date
WORD, in partnership with the Lake Washington Literacy Council,
will host Debbie Miller for a one day workshop on Saturday,
March 17, 2012 from 9 am until 3 pm at Lake Washington High
School. Debbie will discuss:
- :Comprehension strategy instruction
- Thoughtful use of time
- Releasing responsibility to children early and often
- Book selection
- Instilling the spark of agency within children and
ourselves
The cost for WORD/LWLC members is only $60 with nonmembers at
$85; Associate and Student members; $20 and nonmember Associate
and Students; $30. Lunch is provided and 5 clock hours
will be available for purchase. Registration is now open.

2011 Award Winners
Each year Washington Organization for Reading Development gets
the honor to recognize individuals and businesses for their work
in promoting literacy and instilling a love of lifelong learning
either locally or across our state of Washington. The following
individuals were nominated by local councils across our state
and we were pleased to honor so many deserving individuals at
the Fall Conference in October. Our 2011 Award Winners:
- Bonnie Campbell Hill Washington State Literacy
Teacher Leader Award-Pam Pottle, Dawn Christiana and
Kate Norem Norris received this outstanding honor for their
dedication to improving the teaching and learning of reading
and writing in real world contexts.
- Benton-Franklin received the Bernadette Lewis Award
for their highest increase in membership.
- Parkplace Books was given the Partnership Award-nominated
by LWLC for their Partnership in Young Authors.
- ESD 113 & Dana Anderson were given the Partnership
Award-nominated by Cheryl Vance for their impact on
schools throughout the ESD.
- Dorcas Wylder was awarded the Outstanding
Administrator Award-nominated by SAC-IRA for her
outstanding leadership and advocacy of literacy.
- KHQ was awarded the Media Award-nominated by SACRIA for
their promotion of literacy in Eastern Washington.
- Cheryl Vance was awarded the Merry Cammack Inspiration
Award for her continual inspiration for literacy leaders,
teachers and students across our state.
